9T Labs Features a Lightweight Oris Carbon Fiber Watch

Hey, you!

I know you came for our awesome blog post, but we have to let you in on something. Our main business is a shop that sells a ton of unique and cool lifestyle and personal accessories made with REAL carbon fiber.

If you love carbon fiber as much as we do, go explore!

Oris has long been a well-established watchmaker that proudly stands alongside other Swiss conglomerates. However, what’s unique about this brand is that it doesn’t only manufacture luxury watches but also works with climate-neutral companies to support the planet.

Recently, Oris has teamed up with Coulson Aviation, a Canadian agency that fights wildfires worldwide, and 9T Labs, a Swiss expert in carbon composites. The result is a limited edition of the famous ProPilot series to pay tribute to the firefighter heroes.

Find out what the Oris ProPilot Coulson Limited Edition offers the fans of carbon fiber watches or simply those who want a cool-looking watch on their hand.

Oris Carbon Fiber Watch - A Tribute to the Coulson Aviation Heroes

About 9T Labs and Coulson Aviation

9T Labs

9T Labs is a team of carbon fiber innovators based in Switzerland. Established in 2018, 9T Labs aims to deliver the next stage of high-performance materials.

9T Labs aims to achieve this by utilizing an automated manufacturing workflow comparable to that of the most cutting-edge companies. Using software with built-in simulation tools that enable quick and highly optimized designs, 9T Labs can reduce the complexity of composite materials and their manufacturing process.

Coulson Aviation

On the other hand, Coulson Aviation, established in 1960, currently offers aerial forest fire suppression services worldwide.

The company can fly around the clock and concurrently on several continents. In the hottest months of summer, the biggest wildfire hotspots where Coulson sends their airplanes to are South America, Australia, and California. As the only one of its kind, Coulson operates both fixed-wing planes and helicopters designated for fire suppression.

Change for the Better - The Oris-Coulson Partnership

The Oris-Coulson partnership was established as a part of the “Change for the Better” campaign. Their vision, “to put out fires, support firefighters, and safeguard life,” makes the Oris ProPilot Coulson a perfect watch to spread the message. And with the help of 9T Labs in providing cutting-edge technology, this initiative is made possible.

Giovanni C. - the co-founder at 9T Labs - claimed that the partnership revealed the possibility of making their technology the upcoming industry standard for mass-producing composite products that are strong, lightweight, and sustainable, in addition to improving the functionality and aesthetics of the Coulson carbon fiber watch.

Blazing and Gradient - A Dial on Fire

The blazing, gradient orange dial will catch your eyes when you first glance at it. Looking at this dial, you can’t help but think of a raging fire, both breathtakingly beautiful and terrifying simultaneously. Fire is also what the pilots observe on their missions.

In more detail, the color of the dial changes from a darker, almost red hue at the top to a lighter orange hue at the bottom, resembling a wildfire. Even though it’s unique and perhaps not to everyone’s taste, it works perfectly for the Oris-Coulson partnership.

A black date window at 6 o’clock is another highlight that breaks the consistent pattern of large Arabic numerals around the perimeter. The white hour, minute hands, and indices are luminous. The second hand is black, matching the date window.

Leading-edge 3D-printed Carbon Fiber Case

Additive Fusion Technology (AFT)

In this watch, a cutting-edge technique called Additive Fusion Technology (AFT) and carbon fiber, a product made from the exploitation of heat and fire, are utilized to make the watch case, making it a perfect tribute to the heroes at Coulson Aviation.

AFT replaces the traditional method of cutting the watch case out of metal blocks, offering several advantages. For example, by preserving carbon fiber and maintaining quality in all pieces through 3D printing and compression molding, the technology delivers lightweight cases at 65 grams with maximum strength, minimum waste, and unique aesthetics.

PEKK Carbon Fiber Composite

Making high-precision parts like a watch case with an unprecedented technique takes work. However, since the revolutionary method used by 9T Labs is so sophisticated, they can fix the structural pattern of the material, which is often random in carbon fiber watch casings. The final product is what 9T Labs calls the 41mm PEKK carbon fiber composite case.

The case design is reminiscent of the well-known Big Crown ProPilot. Along with the screw-down crown and glass case back, the outer bezel is made of titanium with a gray finish. A sapphire crystal protects the dial, and the casing has an orange underside and black-textile strap. The rating for water resistance is 100 meters.

Chronometer Precision In-house Movement

The new Caliber 400 automatic, developed in-house for power and longevity, operates the Oris ProPilot Coulson Limited Edition. The goal is for a high-performance system to function long-term while keeping up with users’ preferences. In addition, the automatic movement, praised as the “new standard,” promises to deliver some “muscles.”

This in-house movement is highly anti-magnetic and accurate within chronometer standards at -3/+5 seconds per day. Its 120-hour power reserve contains 21 jewels and beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz). However, apart from an open-worked rotor and a well-finished construction, the movement still needs to be decorated.

Technical Specifications and Purchase

Only 1,000 Oris ProPilot Coulson Limited Edition pieces are available for 4,500 USD/4,200 CHF. Nevertheless, it’s a fair price for a limited Big Crown ProPilot with a cutting-edge case. Besides that, a 10-year warranty is included.
