You chose the car. Then the trim, the wheels and the finish. And the last thing anyone reads on it is a plate frame from the dealership with somebody else's name across the bottom.

Which frame fits your car

Carbon fiber license plate frames come in two-hole and four-hole mounting patterns, with Euro and motorcycle formats alongside them. The bracket already on the car decides which one you need, so that is worth checking before anything else. Finish and weave are the part left to you.

Real carbon, and everything pretending to be

Most of what sells under this name is plastic with a carbon pattern printed on it, or a wrap over metal. Both photograph beautifully. In daylight, on a car, neither one reads as real. The weave either has depth or it does not, and it shows from about a foot away, which is exactly where the person next to you at a light is sitting.

Count the screws holding the plate on your car now. Two at the top means a two-hole frame. Four means a four-hole frame will cover all of them, and a two-hole frame will also mount fine on the top pair. So a four-hole car can go either way, and a two-hole car cannot.

Most frames here include the CarbonFG hardware kit, with blackout screws and screw caps so the fasteners match the frame instead of the car. You can also mount one with the screws already holding your plate. Each product page says what is in the box.

Laws on license plate covers vary by state, and in some places any cover, including a clear one, is prohibited. Check your local regulations before installing one, and treat a cover as intended for use only where it is legally permitted. Where covers are not allowed, an uncovered frame does the same thing for the look.

Two things. In states that do not require a front plate, it fills an empty bracket with something you picked. And it gives you a blank face to put a decal, a club logo or a name on for a show, which is why they turn up on cars that spend more time on a stand than on a road.

Because of what they take to make. The frames at the top of the range are a two-piece design, where the carbon fiber frame clips over a separate mounting base so no screw is visible once it is on. The carbon is produced in Europe and the plastics and assembly are done in the US, which is several more steps in several more places than a single molded frame needs.
