Ultra-lightweight & Fire-resistant Carbon Fiber Material From Trelleborg to Hit the Market

Hey, you!

I know you came for our awesome blog post, but we have to let you in on something. Our main business is a shop that sells a ton of unique and cool lifestyle and personal accessories made with REAL carbon fiber.

If you love carbon fiber as much as we do, go explore!

Trelleborg's Applied Technologies Operation has introduced a new carbon fiber material called Soteria FRV. According to Trelleborg, Soteria FRV is a one-of-a-kind lightweight fire-resistant material. Read more about this material.

FRV: A New Cutting-edge Carbon Fiber Material

When it comes to fire damage, the question isn't if a fire will cause damage to a structure, but when. In general, every material is made to protect the equipment or the people inside a structure against fire. However, not all materials can be fire-resistant while still being flexible and lightweight. As a solution, a new carbon fiber material has been recently produced to address this issue.

Carbon fiber raw material has been around recently as a super-strong material that is used to make a range of lightweight, robust, and aesthetic products. To make carbon fiber, several thousand carbon atoms are bound together to form a tow, which may be used by itself or woven into a fabric.

The newly released FRV is a high-performance manufactured composite material made from carbon fibers and an exclusive resin combination. It is the second material in Trelleborg's protection materials range after FR1500

Trelleborg claims three main features make FRV superior to other carbon fiber materials. It's ultra-lightweight, fire-resistant, and extremely flexible. Let's take a closer look at each.

Ultra-lightweight

As an ultra-lightweight material, FRV weighs just 1.2kg/m2. This makes it one of the best production materials for a variety of items such as battery boxes on electric cars. The lighter a car is, the faster it goes!

Fire-resistant

FRV can withstand high temperatures up to +1100ºC for up to 90 minutes with no burn through or expansion during a fire. This might be one of the most essential features of FRV, as the need for a material that can survive a fire without adding weight hasn't been adequately addressed by the material industry for many years.

Ultra-flexible

Any size area of a piece of equipment or vehicle can be draped, wrapped, or molded with FRV. This property makes this novel material ideal for situations with a higher fire risk.

Still not convinced that this new carbon fiber material will be a big hit in the market? It's not over yet! Apart from possessing some of the cool features above, FRV does not require any further curing, resin infusions, pressing, or processing. Furthermore, it does not require regular maintenance once installed, making it easy to transport. This offers a simple "set it and forget it" solution.

3. What Are the Applications of Soteria FRV?

FRV can be used in combination with FR1500 to increase protection for electric vehicle (EV) battery boxes and enclosures or used separately for increased fire risk applications.

FRV can potentially be used in:

  • Enclosures and battery boxes for electric vehicles
  • Fire protection for lithium-ion batteries.
  • Firewall panels for aircraft and automobiles
  • Protection for engines
  • Encasement for electronic equipment
  • On-deck paneling, doors, and flooring for marine and shipbuilding
  • Strategies for fire containment

The carbon fiber material FRV serves many purposes. It can be an affordable alternative to FR1500 or work to enhance other materials. With all of its qualities, it is not hard to say that the possibilities of FRV are endless.
