Most black rings are one flat color all the way through. Tungsten, ceramic and silicone are solid and uniform, and from arm's length there is nothing on the surface to look at. This one is woven, and the weave is the whole reason it exists.

Since 2007 we have specialized in carbon fiber, which is why this ring is built around its surface rather than its shape. It is woven from 1K carbon, meaning every strand running over and under in the pattern is a bundle of a thousand filaments. Standard carbon is 3K, three thousand to a strand, and the thicker the strand the larger the pattern it draws. Thinner strands make a finer, tighter checkerboard. 1K also costs more and covers ground slower on the bench, which is why it tends to turn up where somebody cared what the surface looked like. The finish is matte rather than polished, so what reaches you first is texture instead of reflection. The outer edge is squared off, the inner edge rounded. There is no metal anywhere in it.

It comes in sizes 7 to 14 with half sizes, built to order, so give it a few days on the bench before it ships. The 6mm sits alongside it if you want less band on the hand. Every strand there is about a thousand filaments. Most carbon runs three thousand, and a thicker strand makes a bigger pattern. These are finer, so the grid is tighter.

Use the CarbonFG ring sizing guide, which has a printable chart and a ring sizer you can order. Every order includes one free return or one free size exchange within the USA, so a first miss is covered. Because each ring is built to order, an exchange means making a new one rather than adjusting the one you have.

It is the number of filaments in each strand of the weave. 1K strands carry a thousand filaments. The 3K carbon used on most rings, including our own Ultra line, carries three thousand to a strand, and a thicker strand makes a larger pattern. Thinner strands make a finer, tighter checkerboard, which is the pattern you are looking at. 1K also costs more and works slower, so it usually turns up where somebody cared about the surface.

Wider reads as more of a statement and narrower is quieter on the hand, and neither is more correct. Width also changes the fit: a wider band sits tighter, so if you are a 10 in a narrow ring you may be a 10.5 in a wide one. Measure for the width you actually intend to buy.

No. There is no metal in it to cut, stretch or solder back together, so a carbon band cannot be opened up the way a gold or silver one can. What we do instead is build you a new ring in the size you need, and you get one free return or size exchange within 30 days in the USA.

None. It is carbon fiber all the way through, with no metal core, sleeve or inner liner. That is why it weighs a gram. It is also why the hypoallergenic part is straightforward rather than a coating question: there is no nickel in it to react to in the first place.

It is waterproof and resistant to household chemicals, so showers, dishes and sweat are not a problem and you do not need to take it off for them. Carbon is stiff rather than soft, so we would treat it the way you would treat any hard band around heavy equipment and take it off for that.

Some do. There is nothing about it that is specific to one or the other, and a ring with no metal in it suits people who cannot wear the usual metals or who work with their hands. The thing to know before you commit is that it cannot be resized later, so the size you pick is the size you keep.
